Thorsten Schäfer - Of Counsel (Dipl.-Phys. Univ.) Patentanwalt

Thorsten is a qualified German Patent Attorney (Patentanwalt), bilingual in German and English, and a long-term resident of Munich. He studied Physics at the Technische Universität München, graduating with a Dipl.-Phys. (Univ.) degree. He entered the patent profession in 2005, training as a technical expert at the Munich firm Viering, Jentschura & Partner, before completing his assessor year at the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA) and the Federal Patent Court. He qualified as a German Patent Attorney in 2009.

Thorsten has broad experience in patent prosecution across a wide range of technical fields, with a particular focus on the automotive, electronics and semiconductor sectors. He has drafted German patent applications and utility models for major industry clients including Bosch, Continental and SB LiMotive (a Samsung/Bosch joint venture for automotive battery technology), and has handled office action responses, commentary and instructions to foreign associates for a broad range of clients including Infineon and Samsung Electronics. His technical expertise, rooted in his physics background, spans electronics, semiconductor technology, battery technology, sensor systems, automotive electronics, control systems and exhaust systems, as well as automotive engine technology. He has also worked on matters relating to construction machinery. Thorsten also has experience in coordinating foreign filings, preparing detailed instructions and commentary for associate attorneys in the USA and Asia.

Thorsten has also represented clients in oral proceedings before the DPMA and has experience in German trade mark practice before the DPMA, including the drafting and prosecution of word marks and figurative marks, as well as defending marks in opposition proceedings.

Thorsten joined Jensen & Son as Of Counsel in December 2025, expanding and strengthening the firm's presence in Munich. As a German Patent Attorney, he is also a qualified representative before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), providing the firm and its clients with direct access to EU trade mark and design proceedings.
